We spoke with several locals while in West Yellowstone and every single one of them stressed the importance of carrying bear spray with you whether hiking 1/10th of a mile or 30 miles. You will probably—hopefully—never need it. But, case in point: We were on an easy, heavily populated trail outside Yellowstone and saw a black bear cross the trail in front of us about 100 ft. away!
