"If you do not live in an area with bears (like me), you might be tempted to think that renting bear spray is overkill. IT IS NOT OVERKILL. We spoke with several locals while in West Yellowstone and every single one of them stressed the importance of carrying bear spray with you whether hiking 1/10th of a mile or 30 miles. You will probably—hopefully—never need it. But, case in point: We were on an easy, heavily populated trail outside Yellowstone and saw a black bear cross the trail in front of us about 100 ft. away! We respected his presence and turned back to walk a different way. No bear spray needed, but the peace of mind that comes with at least being prepared is priceless! The self-serve kiosk was super easy to use. It took less than five minutes to rent the bear spray and about thirty seconds to return them! 100% worth the extra time it takes to be safe while on vacation."
