We spoke with several locals while in West Yellowstone and every single one of them stressed the importance of carrying bear spray with you whether hiking 1/10th of a mile or 30 miles. You will probably—hopefully—never need it. But, case in point: We were on an easy, heavily populated trail outside Yellowstone and saw a black bear cross the trail in front of us about 100 ft. away! We respected his presence and turned back to walk a different way. No bear spray needed, but the peace of mind that comes with at least being prepared is priceless! The self-serve kiosk was super easy to use. It took less than five minutes to rent the bear spray and about thirty seconds to return them! 100% worth the extra time it takes to be safe while on vacation."
